so we have ventured into the land of potty training. it all began about a week and a half ago, on a friday. after our typical morning at gymnastics, otto stayed at joe's parents for the day and greta and i went home. on the way, i explained that she was going to start going pee and poop in the potty. we got home and she announced that she had to go. and she did....on the potty. just like that. we had decided on giving her one pez candy when she went, but i was so excited i let her eat practically the entire sleeve of pez!! the rest of the day went in the same manner (except i scaled back on the pez). she went several times on the potty (including one #2...sorry if this is too much info) and we were amazed. for the first two days we did a naked approach...and now she is wearing big girl underwear!! since then, things have continued to go remarkably well. we learned the hard way on saturday that she doesn't need us to ask or remind her to go....she simply states, "i have to pee" and goes and sits down and goes, all on her own. us asking/reminding was causing quite an emotional reaction from her, and backing off was the best thing we could have done. she has had only three accidents in about 10 days of potty training, each of which i blame on us or the situation. she is doing so fantastic!! she has used the potty when we are out and about....at friends' houses, at target, at the zoo....you name it. she is also getting the hang of going (or at least trying to go) before leaving the house. we are still doing a diaper at nap and bedtime, which is when she is choosing to go poop, but this is fine with us for now because she is doing so well otherwise!!
i don't write this as advice for potty training. i think we found a system that works for greta and we also happened to do it at a time when she was ready and open to it. she loves waving goodbye to her pee in the potty and is genuinely excited for herself everytime. she is pretending that her dolls and toys are going to the bathroom and likes to celebrate with them. otto is also getting in on the excitement, as you can see. one of the most difficult parts of this process has actually been keeping him away from her little potties. and away from the toilet paper. and from lifting the toilet lid.
HURRAY FOR GRETA!!
