just in time for christmas

so it is only taking about 5 days for mail to reach my brother in iraq!! this means that you still have time to send him a christmas card. or an ornament for his tree. or some other christmas gift, like a pound of your favorite coffee, 6 geese-a-laying, or a partridge in a pear tree. on second thought, the geese and the partridge might not make it through customs. stick with a card....

our soldier

got a postcard from my brother (greta's uncle john) today. he is currently serving his second tour of duty with the ARMY in Iraq. he must have said 3 or 4 times how great it has been to get mail from us. 3 or 4 times on a POSTCARD. that tells me that the mail we are sending means more than we can ever imagine. to get in on the action, here is john's address. this address is a US postal address, so you can use a regular old stamp. even if you don't know john you can write him to just let him know people back home are thinking about him. tell him you support him....that you are proud of him....that his kids are proud of him. write him about the weather....the bengals win.....what you had for dinner last night. greta can't wait to see her uncle john back home safely.

uncle john's going away picnic

as some of you know, my brother is in the ARMY and is getting ready to head off to iraq for a second tour of duty. we had a going away picnic for him, and it was just an incredible day. there were so many people from all sides of our family there. buckleys, tumblisons, nestheides....you name it, they were there. it was pretty amazing to see everyone together, enjoying each others' company and showing support for our brave soldier.

no matter how you feel about politics or the war or any of that stuff, this is my brother. my mom's son. jessica's husband. roman's daddy. so, for the next year while he is gone, please keep him (and his family) in your thoughts and prayers. now that i have a child, it just breaks my heart to think of john being away from his boys for a year. but he will be back. he is brave, and we are so proud.

and john let told us at the party that when he comes home, there will be another party just like this one. except there will be more beer!! greta will miss her uncle john, but she will definitely keep roman, shamus, and marissa company until he gets back.
